The most important thing while planning to for your visit could be to deciding your mode to reach Leh Ladakh. There are two options available, and choosing among those could be the easiest or the most difficult part of trip depending on mode of transportation, time available and what you love most about your trip.
The one which I prefer personally is taking a route by road. Driving the hills to Leh is most spectacular and breathtaking experience, although it is tough and time consuming.
The route is like a large loop and there are two options for those who elect to travel by road, to start their trip. The starting point could be Manali, one of the most picturesque hill stations in Himachal Pradesh or the other option is Srinagar, the capital city of Jammu & Kashmir. Driving distance from Manali to Leh is stretched approx 480kms and is a beautiful track to drive on. The route is enriched with high passes and snow covered mountains. The track also en route Taglang La, claims the second highest motorable pass in the world. Srinagar to Leh by road is stretched approx 420kms, en route is Dras and Kargil regions. Depending on time available and your preferences you can either start your journey from any of the destinations to Leh or take a flight back to Delhi.
The picturesque magnificence along both routes is unparalleled and we recommend to do the ‘Loop trip’ if you enjoy driving and have the time. In the case you opt for a loop trip, the starting point could be Kangra, Himachal Pradesh as you can easily get a flight from Delhi to Kangra. The total route will be around 1500kms and route could be Kangra – Manali – Keylong – Leh – Kargil – Srinagar – Kangra. This would involve some reasonably tough and time consuming but thoroughly enjoyable driving and would be your most enjoyable driving experience and is guaranteed to stay masked in your memory forever.
The other option to reach Leh is by air. There are daily flights from Delhi to Leh at 6:15am that returns back to Delhi before 8:10am. This early morning dash could be as a result of the fact that Leh is prone to high velocity winds which grows up as the day progresses. This is one of the most amazing flights that one can make in the country with endless, breathtaking mountain vistas stretching before and below as you land and take off.
