Manali to Leh Ladakh
Its already April here and a lot of us started making our plans for our Leh Ladakh trip. The picturesque road from Manali to Leh Ladakh is full of surprises and adventure all around the journey. The whole journey is filled with beautiful mountains, snow covered hills and a few of world’s highest motorable passes as well. This bike trip will make you completely filled with life and memories & will prove to be a lifetime experience for you.
Manali to Leh Ladakh distance
Today we will cover the major spots and itinerary for your trip from Manali to Ladakh. The Manali – Leh highway will start from the beautiful Rohtang Pass and also en routes world’s second highest motorable pass, Tanglang La, located at an altitude of 5,328 meters from sea level is highest among your journey from Manali to Leh. The total distance from Manali to Leh is approx 474kms and could be covered in approx 3 days. Best time for your journey could be from mid May to August as during this time you will be able to visit most of the tourist attractions and mostly all of the roads will be opened. The Rohtang Pass is also blocked in winters due to heavy snow which gets opened nearly in mid may for the tourists.
Manali to Leh Ladakh Itinerary
The very first day, you can spend in Manali. Make yourself comfortable in the weather as the temperature here is a little down as compare to our cities. You can spend your day for sightseeing and to visit a few attractions like Hidimba Devi temple, Vashisht natural hot baths, or the Solang Valley. Do not make your day much stressful as you have to start your next day early in the morning.
Manali to Jispa
The very next morning, hit the road early in the morning at about 6a.m. so that you can reach Rohtang pass as soon possible in order to avoid the hustle and heavy traffic of the tourists which is there only to visit Rohtang Pass. As soon as you reach at the top of Rohtang, the first rays of sun will welcome you with the pleasant and a soothing morning. Spend some time there gazing the beautiful nature and meanwhile you can have some tea or snacks there.
The total distance between Manali and Jispa is approx 116kms and will take you around 6-7 hours to complete the journey. As soon you drive down the Rohtang pass, you will reach Gramphoo, Koksar and finally Tandi which is approx 87kms from Manali. Here you will find the last Petrol Pump on your route and next pump will be in Leh itself. Fuel up your bikes and take about 2-25 liters extra fuel in jerry cans with you. Please make sure to pack the jerry cans well in order to avoid jerks which can make the fuel to leak. Depending on time, you can visit Trilokinath Temple which is at a different diversion from Tandi. After Tandi, you will reach Keylong and than Jispa, here you will find both the guest houses and tented accommodation for your stay
Jispa to Sarchu
This ride is an absolute breathtaking and you cant resist many stops on the route for the photo sessions. After driving approx 52kms you will be reaching Baralacha La, at an altitude of 16,000ft. /4880m. The top of the world feeling that you get here is unlike any other and spending a few minutes to fully taste the experience is a must. Driving down the Baralacha La, an expensive green valley welcomes you and the drive down to Sarchu is extremely scenic. After a drive of approx 36km you will reach your destination, inspite of a total of 88kms it will take around 7-8 hours to reach Sarchu from Jispa. Here you will find tented accomodations for around INR 200/person.
Sarchu to Leh
Make an early morning start today. Immediately after Sarchu, is a checkpoint that marks the Himachal Pradesh state border. The distance from Sarchu to Leh is around 114 km. The first dhaba you will find across is 79km away at Pang. After here, a drive of approx 67kms will take you to the highest motorable road on Manali – Leh highway, Taglang La, known as the second highest motor-able pass in the world at an elevation 5,328 m (17,480 ft). If you are not much physically fit, It is advised not to stop on the pass for much time as it could create serious breathing problems.
From here a drive of around 108kms will lead you to your final destination, Leh. You will be driving down from Tanglang La to Upshi which is around 61kms and from here the road will be mostly plain and well metaled. In Leh you can find a good accommodation near old Fort road or some of your favorite destination as well.
