Delhi to Leh Ladakh Travel Itinerary
Getting there to Ladakh be the easiest part, or the most difficult depending on your chosen mode of transport! There are daily morning flights from Delhi to Leh Ladakh that takes approx. 1 hour 20 minutes to reach Ladakh. The driving option is possibly even more spectacular, although considerably more time consuming and details of this road trip plan is being provided in this article.
The route being like a large loop, there are two options available to those who elect to travel by road – the entry point could either by Srinagar or Manali. Depending on the time available, and whether you are in a rented vehicle, you can drive in to Leh from either direction and take the flight out or drive out the other direction. The scenic beauty along both the routes is unparalleled and our recommendation is to do the complete round trip if you enjoy driving and have the time. This would involve some reasonably tough – but thoroughly enjoyable driving and the experience of this is guaranteed to remain etched in your memory for lifetime.
If you decide on road travel and choose the Manali Leh Highway, you will need two days around Keylong (11,000ft) to acclimatize well and then another night or two en route. Similarly, when approaching Leh by road from Srinagar, you should spend a couple of days in Kargil.
If you choose to fly into Leh, allow for two days rest in Leh while planning your itinerary. Of course nothing may happen and you may well handle the altitude, but the risk of altitude sickness is just not worth taking. There is a little to be gained by making the effort to reach this magnificent area and not being able to fully enjoy the beauty and exhilarating experiences it has to offer.
An Important Precaution – Acclimatization:
Irrespective of whether you choose air or road as your mode of travel to Leh, while planning your trip it is of vital importance you take into account the acclimatization required to cope with the low pressure air at altitude above 10,000ft.
